Curves

I recently saw an ad on tv for this new gym called Curves. In case any of you don't know what this place is, I'll give you the rundown. The commercial actually explains it all. There's this woman who is seen stretching before some sort of race, presumably a marathon. Now, she's not the skinniest woman in the world. OK, she's fat. Then the gun goes off and all the other SKINNIER women take off while the fat woman covers her ears at the (apparently) unpredictable sound of a gun firing. Then, the voice-over starts, "Maybe your workout isn't working because you're doing the wrong one." Then, it cuts to shots of fat women doing awkward-looking exercises such as "walking" and "looking at exercise equipment from afar." Then, the skiny-sounding voice-over lady tells all the fat homemakers who are already hooked by that oscar-worthy editing work that they, too can have the body they want by only working out thirty minutes a day, three days a week. So basically, the whole premise of their ad campaign breaks down like this: Being fat makes you very sensitive to the sound of gunshots, so instead of actually "doing something about it," you should just come here and feel skinnier by comparison for 90 minutes a week, then go right back to eating sticks of butter and hams the size of small children. That, in essence, is their message. "You're not doing the right exercise, because you're just too dang fat. The solution is obvious: work out less." They should be more upfront about it, though. Their motto should be "Curves: Come Fat. Stay Fat. Leave under the false impression that you've actually done something you couldn't have done in line at Dairy Queen."

Curves has actually been around for a while. I have one in my hometown. But you're right. I don't think it really works. I don't think 30 minutes of non-challenging moving will aid the weight-loss effort.

I actually have about a dozen friends who have been or are regulars at the local curves and those who are also being consciencious about their food imput are losing weight. Just like any gym, if you don't go regularily or if you use your workout as an excuse to have the extra piece of cake, you are wasting your time and money. Yes the commercials are lame, but the opportunity for a women's only gym is one that can be successful.

My mom is a Curves customer, and she loves it. Contrary to what the commercials show, her workout is actually very rigorous, even as it incorporates weights, aerobic exercise, and fellowship with other women who want the same thing as she does- a way to keep their bodies healthy and looking decent for women over 30 (who, by the way, are the target customers). As long as she follows the workout every day and challenges herself, she leaves feeling great! She also doesn't eat a bunch of crap, and she looks good because of it. Don't knock it unless you have experience with it. Sure, the commercials are lame, but the idea is fantastic.

OK, so maybe Curves does work, but why would I write about that? Who wants to hear about a gym for fat peoplethat actually helps them lose weight? That's not funny.

"Don't knock it unless you have experience with it." - This can be a very dangerous line of logic. So don't use it again.

What I was saying was, why would I write about it? Of course it doesn't have to be funny to be written about, but it does for me. A post about fat people losing weight is the dullest post I could think of.
